Evening sports fans,
Today on the muddy tundra of West Sunset #1, where it was a blazing 61 degrees [insert classic NFL films music here], a band of new found brothers and sisters bound by pigskin (ew, wait that doesn’t sound right..)….
Hey, we won!!! Congratulations –ROIDs, we logged our first win outscoring Indy Team #5, 26-16 (not official, but that’s what I could recall). Thanks to everyone that could make it out, and to those that couldn’t? We missed ya; you missed one heck of a game. We did exceptionally well for our first time out; I was really impressed with how quickly everyone picked up on the offensive and defensive schemes, especially since this was our first time playing together.
Game Summary
Mon got the ‘scoring’ ball rolling on our first play from scrimmage, catching a deep slant at the right sideline, where he managed to keep his feet in bounds, spin around, and high step into the end zone with nothing but daylight in front of him. Melanie caught a quick slant to the right to add the 1-point conversion. Kudos to everyone else on drawing the man-to-man defense to the left side on this drive; this play doesn’t work unless you guys run the routes and the misdirection the way you did.
The second TD was caught by Alia, on a goal line stand, catching a delayed slant to the right, effectively losing her defender in the slurry of traffic created by everyone else flooding the left side of the field. 2-point conversion failed.
Our third score came on a broken crossing pattern play, where a quick blitz flushed Gary out of the pocket forcing him to roll to his right side, and out sprint a defender to the corner of the end zone. On a side-note; the play was originally supposed to go to Katie on the right side, but when it was broken up, she had the foresight to draw the defender with her left and deep in the endzone, effectively clearing the way for Gary to run in for the score. Nice going Auburn!!! 1-point conversion failed.
The fourth and final score came on yet another broken play from the goal line, where Gary connected with Katie, who had found an open space in the zone defense towards the back of the endzone. Gary had to thread the needle with a bullet pass, but Katie handled the fastball, and even weathered an incidental tackle immediately after the catch, by a nearby defender that was standing next to her. Mike (I can’t believe I’m talking in 3rd person), catches a pass to the left to add the 1-point conversion.
Game Notes (as reflected upon by me through a haze of pizza, wings, and root beer while watching the Cowboys-Patriots game)
Lisa- you settled into the rusher’s position (the anchor of the defense in my opinion) and wreaked absolute havoc on the QB forcing him out of the pocket, and disrupting his timing!! You were targeted on a couple of passes, and besides the fact that you were open (a lot, I saw you waving), what caught my eye was one play where you pulled a double move on a defender effectively juking him out of his shoes, and then stretching your arms out to pull down a pass. All I can say is WOW!! It’s obvious to me that we need to exploit your height and athleticism consistently.
Mon- Ey Mon!! A long TD from the first play of scrimmage; and this after not having played in like 15 years?!?!? Nice going!!! Nice job at CB as well. You kept everything in front of you and I don’t think we got beat deep at all.
Steph- Multiple receptions, batted balls from the inside linebacker position AND an interception!! And I saw you chasing that QB around with Lisa making him go in circles. See, and at practice yesterday, you told us you didn’t know what you were doing. Riiiiiiiiight; I’m not falling for that New England trickery!!
Jon- my man here batted down so many passes that I lost count, AND he took a shot to his dome on a short slant attempt across the middle. Basically, Jon head-butted the defender with his head, and his head won. Good job holding down that outside linebacker position!!
Katie- The ringer from Auburn U. Mom did her baby proud by catching one of the more difficult passes to catch for a TD (bullet), and in traffic no less.
Garrett- Had you switching between cornerback and linebacker, and you almost pulled down an interception after back peddling into the open zone. I know that one’s going to haunt you for a couple of days, homey. No worries though, we’ve got plenty of games left.
Alia- TD on a slant underneath the traffic. Way to sell it too, you made it look like you weren’t even going to get the ball; no one was even close to you when you caught it.
Melanie- my sister showed off her past b-ball skills and pulled down a couple of long passes and an extra point conversion. You surprised the heck out of me Mel, considering 2 weeks ago, you were literally dodging footballs I was tossing towards you. Hahah.
Gary- ah, the new and improved rookie QB. You pretty much took to the advice that Sco, Josh, and myself gave you, studied the plays I drew up, practiced, and voila….3 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD. A few weeks ago, you had trouble hitting me on a 5 yard crossing pattern, and now look at you!! Way to spread the ball out to everyone and a nice start to the season, Gnu.
Roscoe- what can I say Sco? They see your long legs, and your new shoes, and what do you become? The ultimate decoy drawing double teams. On the flip side, they didn’t dare throw to your side of the field. We’ll have to figure out how to utilize that somehow. It’s all good, between you and I, we’ve probably seen enough snaps to last a typical NFL career.
Mike- Hey, I’m just glad to be on the team…and still kicking myself for sailing a couple of snaps over Katie and Lisa’s head. I’ve got a good mind to fire myself. My long snapping days are over, side snaps from now on.
